The Gear

The ScallopEye™ and ScallopLight™ have been developed and designed with fishermen in mind. Over the last three years, the gear has been field-tested to cope with the rigours of pot fishing.

ScallopLight™ is extremely robust and waterproof down to 1000m. The lights have a special lens designed to radiate light outwards (to attract more scallops), a long battery life (6 weeks) and is user friendly (automatically comes on and off in water).

ScallopEye™ entrances have been developed to optimise the catching capabilities of pots for crab, lobster and scallop. Their low resistance and one-way swing matches the swimming behaviour of scallops and keeps them securely in the trap once caught. All the gear is sturdy enough to withstand the harsh working environments of fishing.

Frequently asked questions:

  • Disco Scallops is a copyrighted term for scallops which are only caught in pots using LED light technology rather than other traditional methods. Although it’s a new method, it has been trialled and tested for several years across the UK.

  • As a fisherman, you can choose to either adapt your existing crab and lobster gear with patented ScallopEye™ and ScallopLight™ technology to fish for all three species, or fish with scallop-only pots. Information on pricing for these options can be found on our Shop, and you can download information about Scallop Potting in this guide.

  • The Collective helps to distinguish pot-caught scallops (aka. Disco Scallops) from others on the market, creating demand for a premium, sustainable product. Your membership helps us build and manage a trusted supply chain, ensuring you always get a fair price and access to top buyers.
Membership is free with the purchase of Disco Scallop fishing gear through our website, and by joining, you agree to collaborate with our team to help with the onward sale of your scallops.

  • We’re promoting Disco Scallops™ as a sustainable, high-quality alternative to traditional methods. Restaurants and retailers are excited about offering a premium, low impact seafood product that consumers love. Your membership helps us push this movement forward, securing better profits for fishermen like you.

  • The gear has gone through years of testing and development to ensure it helps increase the value of your catch, not reduce it. If you modify your existing crab and lobster pot with the ScallopEye™ and ScallopLight™ technology, it will not influence the number of crab in your catch. More research needs to be done to understand if the number of lobsters is affected, but case studies in the Northeast suggest that pots with the ScallopLight™ entice more lobsters than standard soft eyes.

  • We are building a network of pot-caught scallop fishermen across the UK, represented through our Disco Scallops Collective. By becoming a member of the Collective, you have access to our onward supply chain, as well as access to the marketing materials and communications which have launched the pot-caught scallop phenomenon.

Scallops sold outside of the Collective do not carry the same trademarked name, and cannot be sold or marketed as Disco Scallops.
